Movies / Theaters

Berkeley has many wonderful bookstores, and probably about as many movie screens! We've some remarkable Art Deco Jewels nearby ... Oakland's Paramount Theater is a masterpiece, and the Orinda Theater is particularly a delight at night. Berkeley's own California (Blue & Gold.. Go CAL!!!) and UA Theaters have some wonderful Art Deco details.

I highly recommend buying a Landmark Theater Discount Card. It¹s good for up to two people at a time, is good for six months, and costs about $28 for 5 admissions. It can be used any time except after 6 PM on Friday & Saturday nights.

Wonderful bookstores, lots of movie theaters, and outstanding capuchino. Is it any wonder I love living in Berkeley?

I call it the Hink’s theater, because before the movie theaters were there, it was the Hink’s Department store - wooden floors and balcony’s on the mezzanine level. The theaters are particularly pleasant, with Egyptian and Oriental themes

They stylishly remodelled this Art Deco theater into a series of smaller ones. The exterior mural is worth seeing.

Another of Berkeley's film rep houses. There were many more when I first moved here in 1984. The first time I ever saw Casablanca was with Jane Budimir, one of my Chevron co-workers, at a small upstairs theater on Telegraph Avenue just below Dwight Way. There used to be twin theaters in the La Val's complex in North Berkeley.

Fine Arts Cinema will be part of a new complex by Patrick Kennedy in a few years.

FIrst run art films in Berkeley's Arts District. In the past few years the sidewalk has been widened, trees were put in, and restaurants have tables and chairs ala Paris. It's a real treat, and would be great to see in other neighborhoods too.

A terrific place to go on a date, with your your significant others... and infants. They have Baby Brigade Night on Monday Nights... where parents with infants (usually persona non grata in movie theaters) reign supreme. It’s a very comfortable place to go, with tables, sofas, and easy chairs. Lucy The Cat rates it 4 paws up!

Beautifully restored reperatory theater in Central San Rafael. We went to a movie there once, and it was introduced by a kindly docent. A very comfortable place to watch interesting movies.... or listening to a radio show.. In just a few hours, West Coast Live (www.wcl.org) will broadcast from the theater as part of its travels across the bay
