Museums & Galleries
Some of the Bay Area's Treasures
The Bay Area has some wonderful museums ... and my hands-down favorites is the Oakland Museum. It has 3 different galleries - Nature, History & Art - and every time I visit it's like seeing old friends! Their special exhibits are always interesting.

Other terrific museums are the San Francisco Exploratorium, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Treasure Island Museum, and the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park (soon to be rebuilt), and the Behring Auto Museum in Blackhawk.

History buffs - be sure to visit the USS Hornet in Alameda, the USS Potomac in Jack London Square, and the SS Jeremiah O'Brien and Submarine Pompanito in San Francisco.

Further afield, Sacramento has an outstanding Railroad Museum - the best I've ever seen... and an easy train journey from Berkeley. Monterey has a wondeful aquarium... and makes for a special weekend trip to Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel.

USS Hornet Museum Pier 3, Alameda Point
Alameda CA

History buffs, and those wanting to honor the generation which saved the world, should visit the USS Pampanito in San Francisco, the USS Hornet in Alameda, the USS Potomac in Jack London Square, and the Jermiah O’Brien.. one of the last remaining Liberty Ships

The USS Hornet became one of the most decorated ships in naval history. The ship recovered Apollo 11 space capsule which contained the first men to walk on the moon. The Hornet is reputed to be haunted.

This is a wonderful place to visit when you're in Monterey... and Monterey/Carmel is a delightful place to visit when in Northern California.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the Aquarium in Monterey. It’s an easy day trip from the Bay Area, though I highly recommend an overnight stay in the Monterey/Carmel Area.

Asilomar is a delightful place to stay. It’s the State of California Convention Grounds... which sounds awful, but is actually a lovely place designed by Juila Morgan

Stanford University was founded by Leland Stanford and his wife, in honor of their young son who died. Leland was one of the Big Four, who helped build the railroad from Sacramento to Promontory Utah... which is a long way of saying that this is why the Golden Spike is here!

It'a an attractive museum with interesting special exhibits. Two other things make the museum special.... a spectacular set of Rodin sculptures, and a stoneworks installation by Andy Goldsworthy. Go see Rivers & Tides if you'd like to be fascinated by his installations. The movie is both intriguing and boring... and I stayed through the entire thing. (It actually was the last movie I saw at Berkeley's Fine Arts Theater before it was torn down to be resurrected in a few years as part of a mixed use comples at Shattuck and Haste.

I got my first HO Scale train when I was about 15. I remember gettting $100 in traveller’s checks for the journey from my apartment on Pelham Parkway in The Bronx to Madison Hardware on 23rd Street. I bought a 2-8-8-2 Norfolk Southern Y6b engine.

Madison Hardware is long gone, my mom left the apartment in the late 90’s, and I hadn’t played with trains (politically incorrect expression amongst model railroaders) till my 51st birthday, when I bought a Kato N Scale train set. I moved the computers out of the home office, and it’s now the train room shared by me and Lucy The Cat (aka Catzilla)

That’s a long prelude to tell you that the best model railroad in the East Bay (not counting the outstanding setup in Walnut Creek) is the Golden State Model RR Museum.

They have a wonderful N Scale setup, a large O scale under construction, a particulary delightful HO Scale model, and an extraordinary traction (aka streetcar) layout representing 40th and Piedmont Avenue.

Go!

Be sure to look out for the Keddie Wye and the Williams Loop (the tracks loop around on themselves to gain elevation without going up too steep an incline. The Tehachapi Loop in Southern California is another Engineering Marvel.

If you're in a hurry, the easiest way to get to Portola is via Reno

This is the Jewel In The Crown of Science Museums... though it’s so hands on that I wouldn’t call it a museum.

I spent one special night there several years ago... looking at a “live” telecast of a Total Solar Eclipse over Turkey. It was an intimate affair - me and thousands of other folks at 4 AM!

Speaking of intimate... the Tactile Dome is a special place. In one of my last acts as a member of Mensa, I had the fun of a nude trip through the tactile dome. My lips are sealed. It was a very 60’s thing do do, but I did it in 1978.

Frank Oppenheimer was a (the?) founder of The Exploratorium. His brother J Robert is better known for managing the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Sam Waterston did an extraordinary portral of him in “Oppenheimer - An American Tragedy”

What great fun... a delightful selection of vintage streetcars from around the world. The PCC cars are in different livery to reflect their home city. As Ronald Regan would have said [and someone else did say... but I forget who], if you've seen one PCC, you've seen them all. In this case, it's true! As far as I can tell, all PCC cars DO look exactly alike!

One of our favorite museums in the Bay Area. They usually have an outstanding show

The best deal in town (other than the Peet’s $20 coffee card) is the West Coast Live Double Header

Go to Sedge Thomson’s West Coast live radio show (www.wcl.org) when they play at SFMOMA, and the $10-12 admission charge includes admission to the museum

Sedge’s show is outstanding- the variety of guests is remarkable, and he’s one of the finest interviewers around (even better than Terry Gross, of Fresh Air). I can’t think of anyone who interviews people better. Sedge is extremely well prepared (and we often hear the guests say that they heard that he was good). An interesting side light is watch the frustration of the producer as they try to signal Sedge that he’s out of time, and he keeps on going.

We’ve had the pleasure of seeing Steve Allen, Sammy Cahn and other delightful guests over the years, and have hosted several Client Appreciation Parties at the show

Tune in KALW 91.7 FM Saturday 10 AM to Noon to listen to the show

Then plan a trip to “see” live radio. You’ll not regret it

Great fun. Sarah Winchester was told that if she moved west and built a house, and kept on building, she would not be plagued by the spirits of the ghosts of people killed by the Winchester Rifle.

It’s a remarkable home - beautiful details, staircases that go nowhere, cabinets which are an inch deep, and a maze of rooms and hallways.

Go see it!

I really enjoy this... it's a huge model of San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bays... and used to determine the effect of water flow and salination on the bay. The vertical scale is 10X the horizontal scale (which doesn't affect the experiment). It's fascinating to see how deep the Golden Gate actually is.

The first time I ever saw a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" Steam Engine was at a railroad museum in New Hampshire. It wasn't till decades later that I saw the one at Denver's Forney Museum. They've since moved to a new facility in the northern part of Denver.

Are you a railroad buff? Denver and environs has a lot to offer you. The Colorado Railroad Museum in nearby in Golden (yes... home of Coors Beer). Along the Front Range south of Denver (through Colorado Spring?), the BNSF and UP share trackage. About 100 miles north of Denver is Cheyenne, Wyoming... site of the UP Transcontinental Rail Line... and home to another 4-8-8-4 Big Boy in a park east of town.

Colorado's main Railroad Museum. When in Denver, be sure to visit the UP 4-8-8-4 Big Boy at the Forney Museum. There's another 4-8-8-4 Big Boy in a park in Cheyenne, about 100 miles north of Denver.

When you're in the Berkshires, be sure to visit Tanglewood, Stockbridge, Lenox and the Hancock Shaker Village. Carol and I planned to spend an hour or so there, and we were so intrigued by the simplicity and elegance (not fancy, just elegant) design of the homes, shops, barns, and lifestyle of the Shakers we spent the entire afternoon here. It's well worth a trip

Visiting St. Louis? Be sure to visit the Museum of Transportation... they've a remarkable collection of steam and diesel engines... including a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4006 (also at the Forney Museum in Denver, CO and a park in Cheyenne WY) and a UP Centennial #6944 (the world's largest diesel electric locomotive). I believe there's another Centennial at the Portola Railroad Museum in Portola CO. They even have cars and planes there... it's a museum of transportation!

When you’re in Santa Fe, be sure to stop by this folk art museum - it’s filled with charming items, and one of our favorite museums. I think you can get a multi-museum pass which gives you admission to several Santa Fe museums.
